Soundtracks and Set Pieces
After I watched the Royal Tennenbaums, I wanted to repaint every room in my house in shades of pepto-bismol and pomegranate. I'd play Elliot Smith and Nick Drake the whole time that I painted. And probably wear a plaid suitcoat at the same time.
My parents arrived late last night for a three day visit. I'm sort of hoping for a Rachel Porter soundtrack for their visit, with nostalgic lighting. I'd like for them to tell familiar stories with startling and delightful new details slipped in. And we'd all be drinking strong decaffinated tea and sitting around in long flannel pajamas with lambswool slippers.
Maybe I should draw up some storyboards to help everyone share my vision before anyone wakes up this morning and we get started with the real thing.

yeah, good luck with that...
I think it would be more fun if you all presented your own storyboard visions of the 'ideal' visit...I'm willing to bet that the contmparisons/contrasts would be as entertaining and richly colorful as the characters that make up the Rudd family! In the event that the decaf tea makes it to the final edit, I'd like to recommend Madagascar Vanilla Roobois. Good stuff.
Savor the time together, hug your parents from the vanantwerps!
I'm absolutely proposing this idea for the next family gathering. Instead of having real family arguments, we'll end up deciding on one person's scripted conflicts / conversations / etc...
The whole family reunion will be more like a role playing game than an actual holiday.
I think if things work out, we may be able to package it and sell it: "Tired of the Same Old, Same Old at your family reunions? Try being someone else's family this Christmas."
The more I think about it the more possibilities emerge. People could actually trade or sell their old family reunions / holidays....in the form of role-playing-scripts over the internet....
