Free Woody
My student Scott has been telling a story (episode one & episode two) about his friend who was recently expelled from Bob Jones University.
The whole thing is so funny to me partly because I used to live in this particular world, and when I see THIS video that got Woody expelled from Bob Jones, I remember believing that most of these reasons (used to expell him) were good ideas:
. Sacrelig/blashpemy - The song played in the background is titled Jesus, The Holy One. Since, Christ's name is used in the song, it is blasphemous to make a humorous video using that song according the BJU administration. 100 demerits.
2. Dancing - The type of comedy that was performed was of a very physical sort, and since music was played in the background the BJU adminstration called this dancing. 100 demerits(note: apparently the BJU administration considers dancing and blasphemy to be sins on equal level).
3. Swearing - No one swore, but someone who saw the tape said they heard someone swearing.
4. Innapropriate music - The owner of the soundtrack has played the music loudly on his hall and no one has ever said anything about it. However, he didn't take it by to get officially checked.
Lynn and I are trying to figure out what social action we should promote from you, my loyal readership. Should we deluge Dr. Bob Jones' email box with pleas for Woody's amnesty? his re-admittance? Hmmm. Would that be a case of the cure being worse than the disease?
btw: if you haven't got time to get involved in our cause, you should at least take a moment to check out the video...its some not every day that you get to see sacrilege, dancing, swearing & inappropriate music on one website...

Wow, I'm actually excited about this. Your blog gets pretty decent traffic. I don't know what sort of action should be taken either. My goal was just to raise awareness by telling people, and let other people decide what they should do.
The thing that would really bug if I were him, is how "nice" the school is being to him. While I was on the phone, he got a call from someone at the school, about re-admittance(which he is eligible for spring of next year). Just to see what his plans were. The scizophrenia of expelling him for something so ridiculous, and acting so concerned for his well being afterwards is baffling to me. It's so passive agressive it would just make me sick.
I really have more to say, but really I decided early on my goal was to tell the story in as unbiased a manner as possible. I think everyone in the world can understand the absurdity of the situation, and they don't need me or anyone else to explain it to them. I do have fantasies, that are perhaps unrealitic, of this story blowing up into huge proportions. I really wish everyone in America knew about it. I know it's a baby step, but it being on Andrew's blog is alot closer than it being on my blog.

I was trying to figure out it applied and kept comming up blank. So, I'm glad you let me know it didn't apply.
That video was awesome! Seemed like harmless fun to me - Bit of a laugh..... I feel for the kid - I think the school is putting on their best tux without realizing they're only going to the supermarket. I think he should take out the song he was dancing to and dub in the school's alma matter.

I am amazed that even the most conservative Christian young people would want to go to schools like BJU and Pennsacola. Why would you want to live in such a hypocritical and legalistic environment? I think it would break my spirit if I was there.
Someone who transfered to Malone from a Christian university in Tennessee was telling me about some of the rules there: It takes 200 demerits to get expelled; Getting caught having premarital sex is 196 demerits and dancing is 199 demerits. So the implication is that
premarital sex is bad because it could lead to dancing.
