Aim for Ridiculous...
I considered giving up driving for lent last year. The idea got poo-pood enough (for good and bad reasons) that i stuck it on my back burner.
It would have demanded a lot of bus riding (so - waiting and patience) reliance on the goodwill of friends and family (so - self-abnegation and humility) and coordination of schedules and expectations (so - talk and relationship).
BUT why go through all that when you *have* the other car? sitting there in the driveway!?
I'm just getting increasingly convinced that when everybody responds to your ideas with "ludicrous!" and "absurd!" --
maybe thats when you know you're on the right path...

I really like the idea actually, and I think alot of self improvement could come because of doing something like that. However, a problem I see is if you have to rely and the goodwill of friends and family, you are sort of being a burden to them for no reason(as you said the cars right there in the driveway). So, are you really doing good by teaching yourself patience, humility, and relationship building, when you're making yourself a burden to others. Isn't that teaching you selfishness (putting your own self-improvement above the needs of others). I still think it's a good idea, that's just a thought I had about it.
